KMC Becomes Pakistan’s First Municipal Council to Transition to Solar Energy

New-KMC

KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the solar energy conversion of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) building, making KMC Pakistan’s first municipal council to adopt solar power. The transition is expected to save millions of rupees annually while generating surplus electricity to be sold to K-Electric through net metering.

The 150kW solar system, now operational at the KMC building, integrates 80kW into KE’s grid and comprises 259 solar panels, producing 650-700 units of electricity daily. Wahab highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce costs and embrace sustainable energy solutions.

He announced that, with Sindh government support, four hospitals would shift to solar power by January, and three major highways would follow suit. Solar panels have already been installed at Kidney Hill Park, with plans to expand to other parks, recreational spaces, and roads.

Wahab commended the dedication of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) representatives in driving development and ensuring sustainable projects. He emphasized that Karachi is transitioning from past challenges to becoming a hub of healthy activities and progressive initiatives.

The mayor also noted ongoing projects under the District Annual Development Programme, including improvements in Baldia Town and Keamari, as well as pedestrian bridge upgrades. Globally, cities are adopting alternative energy solutions, and Karachi’s climate makes solar energy an optimal choice, he added.

The event was attended by Municipal Commissioner SM Afzal Zaidi, PPP parliamentary leader Karamullah Waqasi, Jumman Darwan, and other council members. Wahab assured that additional development projects aimed at uplifting the city are in the pipeline.
